Academic Seminar on “Understanding the Status of Freedom of Expression and Media in the Contemporary Global Society”

This academic seminar was organized by Mili University and presented by Associate Professor Ahmad Javed Shakeb PhD, Vice Chancellor for Academic Research at Sheikh Zayed University. In addition to the faculty members and students of Mili University, a number of cultural figures and media representatives also took part in the program.

At the beginning, Associate Professor Khalid Ahmad Habib, Chancellor of Mili University, delivered the opening remarks. While welcoming Professor Shakeb, he spoke about the importance of the topic and said that freedom of expression and media is a fundamental principle of a transparent and accountable society, which should be defined within the framework of national interests and values. He further added that, as an academic institution, it is their duty to examine such topics from a scholarly perspective and to enhance public awareness through the promotion of sound ideas.

Later, Associate Professor Ahmad Javed Shakeb, Deputy for Research at Sheikh Zayed University, presented his academic paper. He discussed the value of freedom of expression in the light of the Holy Quran and Hadith, as well as the cases of its misuse in the modern world. Based on global and regional experiences, Shakeb, PhD, also analyzed how freedom of expression is connected with political stability, social development, and the realization of genuine human rights.

He emphasized that freedom of expression is not absolute, but finds meaning under the framework of law and moral responsibility. He compared the press freedom indexes of various countries and discussed media responsibility, the risks of misinformation, and the challenges of the digital age. He also presented several examples of how certain international media outlets have attempted to mislead public opinion.

In the concluding part, participants shared their questions and views, to which Shakeb, PhD, provided scholarly and analytical responses.

At the end of the seminar, as a token of appreciation, Associate Professor Khalid Ahmad Habib, Chancellor of Mili University, presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Associate Professor Ahmad Javed Shakeb, PhD, in recognition of his academic contributions and efforts.
